I feel privileged to have seen the Bayeux Tapestry twice in person. On September 6, a priceless exhibit of the tapestry opened in London at the British Museum. King Phillip and Camilla visited on September 2nd – imagine, the present King of England studying two kings of England from over 900 years ago. This amazing work of art was “embroidered” (I think it looks more like crewel, myself), by English nuns shortly after the Battle of Hastings took place on October 14th, 1066. The significance of what occurred on that date cannot be overstated, so it’s no wonder that this ancient piece of artwork, which was carefully hidden from the Nazis in WWII, is worth 1.1 billion dollars.

The Bayeux Tapestry is nearly 230 feet long (70 metres) and 20 inches (50 centimetres) tall. The thread is a rather thick wool on coarse linen. The tapestry was kept in the Bayeux Castle from the 12th to the 18th centuries. It miraculously has survived the destruction of the French Revolution and the Nazis! The tapestry’s journey to England this year is the very first time in history that it’s left France! It will return to France by July of 2027, once the renovation of the Bayeux Museum is completed.
